About Dogs and Everything Else Under the Sun, even Above It!

Animals and their sixth sense, part 2

There is obviously more to our minds, pets included, than meets the eye. Inventors at times come up against the seemingly impossible. They are used to sleeping on it, and often can come up with a workable solution the next day. Some take a little longer. I’ve been there with Dog Master myself.

I’ll be commenting more on the practical use of our minds in future blog posts, like Transcendental Meditation ™, a technique that uses theta waves. It’s a very natural and effective way to combat stress.

Ok, back on topic. Some say that these animals have a special ability or gift of sorts. However that does not seem to be it entirely. In cases I have been able to examine, one factor stands out. In Oscar’s case it is his total absorption with life at this hospice. He came there as a tiny kitten and knows no other world. This seems to give him special powers.

This factor to most extents is found nearly in all such cases. In a case where a dog found his family again enven though they had moved away, they had prayed for and grieved for their lost pet, having raised him/her from a very young age. They had been very close and had never before been separated.

The same with Herb, the fire engine dalmatian. The firemen had cared for him ever since he was the smallest of puppies. He was always there at the fire station. They claimed to have had to, and I quote, ”carry him on his first fires because there was no one left at the station.”

There appears to be a factor of “total family” or mental dedicatoin here, all starting at a rather precise age. Drs. Scott and Fuller bear this out in their excellent book, “Genetics and the Social Behavior of the Dog.” Page 111 states: “the period of socialization is critical.” A puppy taken from the litter mates as early as 3 weeks and no later than the 49th day is quite certain to become “almost human.” I have found getting your puppy at 5-6 weeks works out very well, provided you can convince the breeder, and is an ideal start for your Dream Dog. These become the almost human, eager-to-learn, problem-free dogs.

Animals and their sixth sense, Part 1

This time it’s a cat. A nursing home in Providence R.I. has a very special cat. He came to them as a baby kitten, was raised by the nurses there and has become at age 2 of considerable interest to the media.

Yes, the consensus is that Oscar can actually sense death hours before it comes to a patient, and his track record is surprisingly high. These observations have led to Oscar’s inclusion in the 07/26/07 issue of The New England Journal of Medicine, the substance being that Oscar very definitely goes and lies on the bed of a person he “predicts” so accurately is about to expire. Of course there is some speculation as to just HOW Oscar knows. But he quite apparently does know. Just how definite this is is somewhat open, but the fact is he knows somehow and is virtually always correct.

I have long noted animals with apparent premonitions of various kinds. I myself as a Junior Fireman in the Casper, Wyoming Fire Department regularly observed a Dalmatian named Herb who alerted firemen by jumping into his seat at the fire truck inerrantly minutes before the alarm even sounded. Now, how did Herb know? The answer alway was, ”Don’t ask.”

Many, many times I’m told of dogs knowing when their masters are going to drive in even before they could ever possibly hear the noise of the car. Some say dogs keep track of time and they even know whether or not there is a tangible evidence of homecoming.

Even more so are times where animals get very upset before an impending disaster, like an earthquake or a tornado. But here maybe they can feel and react as the barometer rises or drops.

Now we all can try to answer these questions, some of us are more qualified than others, but is has been going on for ages.

I can speculate in Oscar’s case that he has known no other life than the identical routine of this place. He knows that when a member passes on there is a hurried, active atmosphere, an obvious event different from the normal routine, and this is an opportunity for him to participate in his own chosen manner. But he anticipates! That’s the part that’s of extreme interest.

Of all the speculation there still resides an essence of the supernatural. Dogs have found their way to their family when lost for various reasons. In some cases the family has moved to a new location after losing their dog. Imagine and speculate but it seems certain, but not always, that some pets in some unknown way can “home in” from clear across the country, miles and miles away, winding up disheveled and emaciated, but definitely on their way back to their family, even if it’s a new or different doorstep.

To be continued….

Great Things Often Tiny but Mighty

Just by remembering, dreaming, loving well, I awoke one beautiful morning to my dream-come-true wife rubbing noses with me and giggling while showing me a tiny old dime. An old 1916D mercury dime that was not old at all comes to find out. Finally realizing that a not-so-old dime of the same era, something which I merely thought of as a keepsake from my boyhood in Wyoming, could itself be of considerable value, wow! Wonders never cease. She had seen it listed!

Now, my wife and I never before thought of ourselves as coin collectors, but. Due to a worldwide growth of our patents with our DOG-MASTER LEARNING SYSTEM, people would at times send us some coins with requests if we could accept “this old thing” as part of the payment.

My Pat’s pride and appreciation for a prospective orderer’s needs (often accompanied by detailed problems with their ”otherwise fine dog”) would of course have her accepting with “pay the rest later” or simply accepted “thank you and good luck.”

Most often these coins were of some bother because if taken to the bank they had to be evaluated one by one against the current coin-to-monetary schedule. So they were kept apart and “collected.” Turns out once in a while over the years, among the sheer volume would be one of outstanding value, like the Alexander the Great silver, circa 330 B.C., and a sea pirate’s treasure from the sunken Spanish galleon Santa Maria de la Consolacion.

Alexander the Great coin, Greek DrachmaBolivian silver, 1 real; from the Consolacion

A lot of those coins were contemporary European, now outmoded and devalued by the ”Euro,” and they were built into a wonderful, night-lit waterfall which we call The Fountain of Wishes and Dog-Master Memories, a pleasantry for others to view in front of my home. But the winged Liberty Head (Mercury Dime) first-issue 1916 Denver Mint, brilliant and uncirculated, is very special. No U.S. coin, large or small denomination, comes close to this tiny silver dime. It saw us through 2 world wars, a great depression, and a worldwide recovery!

I had put it away long ago realizing it was “new” but more likely because of memories. In my cow-boyhood days a dime had superior value. To me it was nearly everything. This tiny, diminutive dime could take me to my favorite movie. It could buy a whole meal, with a Coke! “Brother can you spare a dime?” of the 1930’s gives some feeling for The Great Depression. But even more that all that I felt I had let our milk cows, all of them, drown, and I was, yes, a failure. And yes, drowning with them, and would have, if not for a little American Shepherd named Bronzy. This dog frantically worked his utmost to save my life. As I was– I thought– dying there, seemingly growing larger in my failing vision was this mercury dime. Associated as it was with the cows whose milk would bring the family more mercury dimes. Not only that but the dime then was nearly PURE SILVER, and little known fact was that the silver in the dime when dropped in the milk would keep the milk from going sour, a daily reminder of its uncanny value.

My final (I thought) effort had been Bronzy’s paw to save me at the top of the ice, but I had realized I would only have pulled him in too, so I let go of his paw to save him. A memory that is clearer to this day than back then with all kinds of circuitries and applications, etc. One last thought was of my mother (she had recently died when I was 7 yrs old) teaching me bedtime prayers. I then voiced part of one:

“I pray to God my soul to keep…”

As Bronzy’s paw slipped from my fingers I was startled to realize that his front paw was now instantly his back paw! And with his claws dug into the ice, solidly enough for me to hold as I got my foot against a drowning cow, Bronzy inched forward, helping me pull up  over the ice, and out of that hellhole of struggling, drowning cows.

So! This tiny dime to me has more significance than any  $$$ signs now, and my Pat’s giggles were not for money alone but for the irony of it all since she knows only too well, all of this. A sort of prize, maybe.

General Guy and Trooper

Zoey the Chihuahua is held by her owner Monty Long after saving the Longs' 1-yr old grandson in this Associated Press photo.A delightful item from Yahoo News about Zoey, the Chihuahua who saved a 1-yr old baby from a rattlesnake, takes me back to an intriguing pair of DOG-MASTER dogs.

Dear readers, come with me, back in time to just a few years ago when I gained an interesting family of friends. They started as clients, especially GeeGee, who was also sometimes known as BB. GeeGee was the 5-lb., 5+ inch Chihuahua member of the family, whose given name was originally General Guy, I believe after a real life lady general in our military, probably the air corps. I’m not clear on this part so maybe some of our readers and fellow bloggers can help clue me in and sort out this little piece of history.

Anyway, GeeGee was blond and beautiful– she was a long-coat Chihuahua. BB was her other calling, after the BB air rifle loads, I guess because of her diminutive stature. Diminutive takes on even more reality when one pictures her between the front paws of her pal, Trooper.

I don’t remember Trooper as having much such history, but was a “trooper” under GeeGee/BB’s command. Now get this: Trooper was a full grown Harlequin Great Dane of some 3 feet tall and more, black and beautiful, really massive and even bigger than some tiny/miniature horses today.

I can’t remember which one of this unlikely pair came into the household first but it seemed they came together quite early on, with him thinking of her as a baby at first, but only at first, because she seemed always “The General.”

The family said GeeGee always got Trooper into trouble as he was sure to get blamed all the time. As for me, I was chosen to sort this out to offer whatever needed guidance for their future (the whole family council). It was a pleasant experience. I was warmly welcomed as my own therapy dog Monte was also a long-coat Chihuahua.

Yes, the whole “family” graduated happily as fine examples of DOG-MASTER learners, the General soon coming under the auspices of supreme human commanders. I always had the help in those wonderful days of the unbelievable prestige, even notoriety, of my beloved Monte. Some of this awe coming from his own diminutiveness when sized against his achievements. They were often memorable as one looks back.

The news of Zoey brought me back because of her owner Denise Long’s observation about “tiny dogs not getting credit” after she survived her own altercation, including being bitten by the rattlesnake, in defense of her tiny master, toddler Booker West. It would seem “tiny” is a bit redundant, don’t you think?

Solving Problems the Holistic and Natural Way

Konrad Lorenz loved animals even mankind. He wrote about dogs, their temperaments and relationships with man. A particular insight of his is worth its own in “Pearls of Thought: For Both Man and Dog.” It’s amazing how calming and unifying just “walking a strange way together” can be or do.

I certainly agree. I’ve successfully advised clients with Konrad Lorenz’s observations for some years now. It works wonders in developing the necessary relationships so helpful to dog-Masters. And—it works 100x better if you do so without that negative leash.

In the index of the DOG-MASTER SYSTEM book there is a topic called “Quiet Dog.” It’s a how-to for beginners, of course, because DOG-MASTER dogs just don’t seem to have those issues anymore. This sure is better than having your vet come up with today’s “pill solution.”

More than 10 million Americans take antidepressants and other psychiatric drugs—drugs that are known to cause mental and physical agitation, and spark self-destructive, violent behavior. SSRI’s are so hazardous that the FDA requires that they carry a warning that they increase suicidal thoughts in young people. These drugs can also induce dissociative reactions making those who take them insensitive to the consequences of their behavior.

We should alert ourselves and not think that because some doctor prescribes such meds they are OK. Everybody beware. In a certain percentage of people given these drugs, some of their side effects can actually cause the very problem they are prescribed to aid. Doctors are not always aware that a percentage of people are more than just vulnerable. Drug company salesmen do NOT sell side effects.

There is a growing body of medical knowledge literature, clinical observations linking these meds to thousands of suicides, murders, and assorted acts of brutality and violence. We must come to our senses. Dare me to list. School shootings, remember?

  1. Blacksburg, VA – April 16, 2007: Seung-Hui Cho killed 33 with more than two dozen injured. Antidepressants were found among his effects.
  2. Littleton, CO – April 20, 1999: Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold terrorized Columbine High killing 13 and injuring 23. Harris was taking Luvox.
  3. Red Lake Indian Reservation, MN – March 21, 2005: Jeffrey Weise killed his grandfather and his grandfather’s girlfriend, then continued at Red Lake High, killing 7 more people and wounding more than a dozen, including himself. He was on Prozac.
  4. Springfield, OR – Kip Kinkel murdered his parents, proceeded to school killing 2 students and wounding more than 20. He too, was on Prozac.
  5. Bailey, CO – September 27, 2006. Duane Morrison went into Platte Canyon High School, took 6 teenage girls hostage, sexually assaulted some of them, killed 1 and then himself. Antidepressants found in his jeep.

Another 6 brutal murders too gruesome to describe on top of all the above but of the family type, i.e. brother and sister murdered by siblings, mothers killing their children, a husband stabbing his wife of 50 years to death. One of them on Ritalin, Prozac, and Klonopin, one on Lexapro, one on Paxil, one on Prozac alone, and two on Zoloft.

I’m going to spare you readers from the rest of my list which I’ve been noting for some time. Suffice to say the headings were under arson, etc. and other bizarre behavior using the same drugs with the addition of Wellbutrin.

The Courts agree:

  • North Port, FL – November 4, 2003. Larry Smith opened fire on a gas station. He was charged with attempted second-degree murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and using violence on police while resisting arrest. He was found not guilty by reason of insanity due to being “involuntarily intoxicated” by his antidepressant medication.

  • Santa Cruz, CA – June 20, 2002. Andrew Meyers viciously attacked his friend of many years using a brass-knuckle-type weapon. He was acquitted on grounds of adverse reaction to Zoloft.

  • Spokane, WA – September 26, 1999. Sharon Curry stabbed her 8-yr old daughter to death then tried stabbing herself. She was acquitted by reason of insanity—jury agreed that her meds Paxil and Adderall caused drug-induced pscychosis.

I have more of this as I’ve said. You can also visit www.ssristories.com for more.

What should we all be doing?

These drugs are unnatural chemicals to the human body therefore unpredictable. Also they all are prescribed for symptoms and do not attain nor deal with the real causes. They do not go far enough to the source of whatever the problem is. Therefore at best they only sustain and not cure.

Choose holistic doctors who do not stop with the symptoms but look at the whole body and the real cause. A holistic M.D. will start with the cause and first use NATURAL, body-friendly medication.

One last word on paranoia. Seung-Hui Cho, who killed 33 (including himself) at Virginia Tech, lacked ever having learned to form a relationship. He is a classic case of paranoia. What a God-given solution to this whole grotesque oddity is our best friend the dog. Have you noticed, dog is God spelled backwards? As Konrad Lorenz aptly puts it, an “enjoyable walk in a strange way together,” meaning, a new road taken together, not before, emphasizing new discoveries together, enjoying and developing a relationship.

The frightening lack of this ability can haunt one for life. Being a loner is a number one cause of paranoia, a mental disorder characterized by systematized delusions of either grandeur or persecution, often with an otherwise relatively intact personality.

It’s the relatively intact personality that can fool doctors. The term “paranoid” should not be used loosely as it can make the situation seem almost usual or normal. Often the victim is not recognized as dangerous, and a drug’s side effects can tip the scales toward a scenario of persecution, followed by a calculated “defense” or “payback.”

The horrific aftermath of Blacksburg, VA should motivate us enough. Hope I’ve helped. Three words worth mentioning: RELATIONSHIP. HOLISTIC. NATURAL.

Thanks for listening!

The “MAGIC” of DOG-MASTER LEARNING SYSTEM

I do like to hear from our Dog Masters. This from Chris:

“We’ve got a door dasher, now actually had. We got our DOG MASTER kit and we’re absolutely amazed. ‘Had’ is right!

We saw it on your website and there was our dog at the door, but not out, and then gone! Well, we ordered and thanks for the speedy delivery. We couldn’t wait. And wouldn’t you know it we grabbed the little book and big surprise (great index, by the way), there was DOOR DASHING, and so much more. I had to thank you just for saying why. Directions nowadays rarely say why. Maybe it’s us. We’re a family with Lockheed (yup, that’s our dog) and we like to know why, when, and where to find something out.

We feel we know you now, Dr. Miller. So I hope you get this as well as your staff. We have a request though, hope you understand:

How in the world do the instruments affect the dog’s mind to understand and so quick? I’m sure everyone would like to know this. What’s the magic? Or is this proprietary info?

We’ll be watching. Thank you Dr. Miller for a real advance in the dog world!”

- Chris

For Chris. Here’s the magic. Refer here to the dog’s beta brain waves via this EEG graph. A dip in the wave lenth can be interpreted as the brain stopping and searching when matched (timed) with the simultaneous sounding of the DOG-MASTER dog-sound, i.e., you cause the instrument to sound and see the “dip” instantly appear in the beta brain waves on the EEG.

The Dog's beta brain waves as shown on the electroencephalograph (EEG).

Now Chris, it’s only that you as the good dog’s master learns the extreme importance of simultaneously speaking at the exact moment you sound the DOG MASTER instrument. This exact timing of your word-command and your sounding of the instrument that the word FILLS THE DIP in the dog’s mind because it is more conscious and stays there.

But one more ingredient tells why: You do body language. Crouch down for “COME!” and presto the “good dog” that sees the light and gets the message! This understanding fills his brain’s searching dip and LEARNS. And with PRAISE your dog is usually so grateful in wonderment and discovery that he will run to and lick or grab at the instrument that communicates between dog and master. They are happy and they do love it. You see, your body language (crouching) for the COME and PRAISE– that IS the magic.

This learning together creates a real bonding of dog to master. This is why no one can do this for you or else your dog wound bond to them and not mind you. That is why I insist on doing it yourself!

Thanks for asking.

-D.M.

P.S. - This is for all DOs. To do anything, come up with a word to fill the dip or “V” (for victory!) and your meaningful body langage, and your dog will do it. Praise immediately after and for anytime he does whatever you want. Formula:

dog-sound + your word (command) + praise = learning

DON’Ts are even easier. Say NOTHING, leaving the dip empty and praise when your dog DOESN’T (stops the unwanted behavior). Praise is the cement that seals the right response.

Another tortoise story: get well, Bob!

Ok, I’m upset. I think I’m really upset! A few days ago I discussed a very pleasurable thing, Tony Fabrizio and his relationship with his pet tortoise Newman. But now I hear about a senseless attack on another tortoise.

As I psychologist I can trace virtually all problems, whether with pets, children, or adults, to the great detriment of NOT starting out with a strong relationship.

A good parental relationship sends a younger generation into the “real” world well-armed to deal with others, and life in general. But pets, especially dogs, can be so aggravating at times that unthinking people dump them onto the streets– all for the lack of the ability to form a relationship.

Last week Assemblyman Lloyd Levine (D, Van Nuys CA) had to pull his AB 1634 just hours before a key Senate Committee vote he was sure to lose. AB1634 would have forced owners to spay and neuter all pets in the belief that doing so would somehow help reduce the thousand of pets being dumped and abandoned, and then being euthanized as they wind up in the animal shelters.

While it is true that spaying and neutering can help ease pet overpopulation, the real solution is to have the ability to form a true owner-pet relationship, which has to recognize that all creatures on this earth are life forms having a function in the scheme of all life itself. Their differences are amazing, even engrossing. Why should only scientists recognize the very necessity of each? For example, the Nobel Prize was shared in 1973 by Karl Von Frisch who studied and found a language in bees. One bee finding a “source” would “report” at the hive to the others so all could do their jobs. Everybody, I hope, knows about the function of bees in the life cycle, that some of our food and our flowers would not grow without the pollination of the bees!

Anyway, just a couple of days ago I was happy to comment on Tony Fabrizio’s fascinating relationship with Newman. Newman is a different life form from the usual pet dog or cat. He is an African Desert Tortoise, also known as Sulcatas, who can live to well over a hundred. I even provided a link to viewing Tony and Newman taking enjoyable walks together. It’s such a joy to see Newman follow Tony without a leash!

Now here’s the upsetting news. This is really bad news. It’s about another tortoise, whose name is simply Bob. He was stolen, slashed, stabbed, and mutilated by someone who saw no kinship with other life forms, who obviously did not see Bob as a beneficial life form, and who undoubtedly had difficulting forming real relationships.

This someone tried to tear Bob from his shell, not knowing that Bob is a part of his shell and vice versa, somewhat like crustaceans (crabs, lobsters) who are different in that their bones are outside of their flesh as opposed to us humans or dogs or cats who have bones inside the flesh. Still, all are LIFE forms. Ok?

Whoever did this abyssmal barbarity on this hapless tortoise needs to wake up to the workings of life and the outer and inner world. Bob is not only important as a life form but he is also a wonderful gift to his human family. Bob is a 42-lb African Spurred tortoise belonging to Bill and Dorothy Sullivan. But more importantly, he is the special friend of their 6-year old autistic son, who they say rarely spoke to anyone but “chattered” to Bob.

Bob, thank God, is going to live. But he is in guarded condition at Turtle Dreams, a rehab facility in Montecito, California. Get well soon, Bob!

What’s wrong with our pet food?

Thanks to Marmaduke, 2007 King Features Syndicate

Before I begin, thank you Marmaduke for this cartoon.

Ok now…In my website I talk about the pet food recall. It’s still a hot topic and I’ll say off the bat the whole thing smells of a sordid conspiracy. Little wonder it has continued to unravel in the news.

I try to make my blogs short and I don’t often succeed. So I’ll go with just 2 points:

  1. what we’re feeding our pets and
  2. where they are manufactured or come from.

First, I’ve never met a dog or cat that was ever, and purely vegetarian. You can best trust nature. Put 2 bowls in front of them and see which gets devoured first: a bowl of good raw veggies, or a bowl of cheap raw meat. I don’t even have to say it. You know the answer. Yes, good animal instincts are at the heart of nature.

The profit-motivated kibble industry is bent on bending these natural meat eaters into vegetarians. It’s no secret that today’s pet food is made of vegetables and soy. And they are cooked! The NATURAL healthy diet for out pets is raw meat and fat. This is straight scientific nutrition, not pet food industry blarney. Growing up on a farm or a ranch is fast passing even from history. But there was an apt expression “sick as a cat,” and the other “sick as a dog.” Ever see one? They act as if they’re going to die and soon. Here come my boyhood memories again. Back at the ranch in Wyoming. One was “sick as a dog” dog. No vet in sight within a day’s ride. What to do? How to treat?

Chicken livers! Don’t ask where, when, or how this treatment came about but that was the emergency cure. And I do mean cure! Come up fast with raw chicken or rabbit livers and overnight all’s well. Believe it.

I can get all scientific and explain why. But you don’t need it. I’m just trying to point out– with facts. There is a natural value of uncooked meat for meat eaters, dog and cats. It’s an uphill battle and it’s even beginning to sound foreign. Raw meat. And you need so little compared to kibbles.

More food for thought: hasn’t everyone noticed that what were once only human diseases– heart and kidney disease, diabetes, arthritis, and you bet, cancer– have suddenly turned into pet diseases? I say for sure, it’s the food our pets are being force-fed.

If you’re still with me, I’ll finally raise the point: all this force-feeding of vegetarianisms is yes, the root cause of the recent contamination of mass-produced pet food. I call it fraud and here’s why. The industry knows pet owners’ key term is protein. Never mind what kind or where it comes from, just that it has protein and the one with the most WINS.

Now here comes sneaky fraud– WHEAT GLUTEN. Wheat gluten is a glutamine they sneakily add to pet food to boost protein. It is way, way cheaper to get them from China’s slavelike labor forces than from the world’s greatest wheat producer: the USA. Profit-minded America!

It’s fairly certain that the gluten we bought from China was contaminated with a Chinese “booster” of their own. Now we see, boost the appearance of protein with a substance called MELAMINE. It’s a toxic chemical used in wood, fertilizers, and elsewhere. Melamine itself is not high-protein but it is high in nitrogen. And nitrogen levels generally correspond with protein levels in cursory testings.

I think this is too much of a coincidence. It took us a long time even to discover the melamine, and only because of public outcry for our poisoned pets! At first I thought it was accidental, because fertilizers and car anti-freeze can come from the same factories in China. But it’s just too coincidental. Much more likely, the low cost of boosting the protein did it. Maybe I’m on to something. We’ll see.

Did anybody know that the FDA only tests about 1% of the food ingredients that cross our borders? That says very clearly, 99% of the food (yours, mine, and our pets’) coming from outside this country slips under our detection. Buy American!

Now there’s one good dog food. It’s called BARF diet, not a reverse joke either! It stands for Biologically Appropriate Raw Food. Go online to www.barfworld.com. I highly recommend it. Yes, let’s do the right thing for man’s best friend. And his cat friend too. Try it. Bye for now.
