DOES YOUR DOG HAVE A PROBLEM?
In this section, Dr. Dare Miller answers our customers' letters.
LETTER# 4:
JUST A QUESTION OF CURIOSITY
Dear Dr. Dare: A few nights ago we had some friends in for a get-together. The conversation got around to, of all things, "what is a dog thinking when he wags his tail?" The subject absorbed us all evening. It went from the original question and on to "why does he wag his tail at all?" We are all curious as to what you'd say. Curious in Indianapolis
Dear Curious: I'm eternally surprised at the number of people interested in this question. Katherine Hepburn once called me at night to ask me the same question. I'll give you the same answer now. Dogs are body-action oriented in their communication. They are the greatest of all actors. An enthusiastic, happily wagging tail usually receives the instinctive response of a smile from the human beholder. I think then we can say the the dog's wagging tail can most often be likened to a human smile. We should caution though that once in a while a dog, like some people, will wag a friendly tail at a distance but snap if you get too close.
